He was a biblical counseling major which meant we could have been classmates in a few months I thought to myself.
Hushed tones laced our words as my friend and I talked about the unexpected shortness of life. We breathed prayers for a school that had to be hurting like nothing else. I could not even fathom the pain. How does life go on when a part of the body of Christ goes to glory? Inwardly I ached for people I had yet to know.
Life seemed short and unpredictable that Sunday afternoon and yet, so full of God's perfect plan and goodness.
Two months later I was on facebook again (checking facebook has become a bit of a emotionally traumatizing experience for me in more ways then one) and saw statuses I did not want to believe.
Gone in one quick moment of an intense outburst of weather gone horribly wrong. Nineteen men loved dearly, by their family and friends taken off of this earth. One of those someone I knew too well and my friends knew even better.
Pain struck close to home again and the days following seemed to have little reason. Except for one enormous fact. God was still good and still in control.
Two men, both two stellar godly men. Two men loved for their personalities. Two men who made the name Christ known to those around them.
I would be rushing to work and suddenly "10,000 Reasons" would blare through the dusty speakers and I would stop and remember the goodness of God and think of the beautiful hope of glory.
I wasn't there when those two guys lived their last moments on this earth, but knowing one and having heard of the other I can't help but imagine these words being on their lips.
And on that day when my strength is failing
The end draws near and my time has come
Still my soul will sing Your praise unending
10,000 years and then forever more
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I worship Your holy name
The end draws near and my time has come
Still my soul will sing Your praise unending
10,000 years and then forever more
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I worship Your holy name
Unexpectedly life may change, but the unwavering character of God will always remain good. And on that day when my end is near may I leave behind a testimony of God's grace and goodness. A testimony completely free of my own merits.
