Of Babies

Soft skin brushes my arms and little arms and legs flail with startlement and then the cries erupt. Cries of shock from being taken from what was comfortable to what is new and harsh feeling.

Just as quick as they started the cries silence. A soft rhythm of breathing takes over and the little baby falls asleep in my arms. This baby, the one that is only a few weeks old. The one that coes and sighs just like any newborn. This baby willingly trusts itself to my arms and lets me rock him to sleep. He cannot comprehend who I am, he only knows that he has found a warm place to sleep. For now his needs are filled and he blissfully sleeps till a rumble of the tummy will wake him.

I snuggle this tiny weight against me, so much warmth and soft snuggles. It seems as I rock this baby that every problem and care in my life is melting away. Calm fills me from the peace of watching this baby sleep.

This is new life at its best. The late night feedings, blow out diapers, and never ending fussiness are not here. Only beautiful bliss and marvel of what happens when two people come together and a baby is born.

I wish to never relinquish this baby back to its mother. For there is nothing more that I ardently adore than gazing at an infant. This feeling, of simply holding new life.

There is a certain breath taking awe over the start of life. Its the excitement and giddiness of finding out a new baby is coming and being trusted with a secret.

Its finding out that the impossible has happened and a new life is to be born when it wasn't supposed too.

Its when you see those chubby checks on the ultrasound photo and knowing that the baby is full of health. Realizing that worries can be pushed aside. Getting all happy with knowing that in a few weeks you will be snuggling the baby and touching its chubby checks.

It's hearing of the awfulness of morning sickness, but the realization that the unpleasantness is assuring that a baby is growing and thriving in its mother's womb.

Life begins tiny and fragile. Life makes its announcement when it forces a mother to bend over a toilet and cling to the couch. Life comes into the world through excruciating pain. Life drains a mother of energy as she toils to care for someone so completely dependent on her. But yet this something not traded for anything.

I cannot get over how a human grows in its mother's womb. And I will never stop swooning whenever an infant rests in my arms.

This is not knowing the potential of this tiny life, but knowing that the baby not yet seen or the completely dependent baby you are holding will turn into a person with potential to change its world.

Dr. Suess, says it perfectly, "No matter how small, a person is a person". the essence of life.
